He is born in the heart of history, in Mtskheta, the place where the first Christians converted in this far land of the Asian-European doorsteps. He was raised in the heart of Caucasian mountains, in Lentekhi, a small village with a few hundreds souls up in the mountains, where is born Soso Liparteliani, the first Olympic medallist in Georgia’s history (bronze in 1996). Both don’t have any family relationship but they do have in common their love for Judo, their fighting spirit, their will to win.
The Georgian National team didn’t make any mistake. It has chosen him as captain. Since, thanks to his skill and his charisma, Varlam Liparteliani has many times led his troops to victory. Thus, he is two times World champion (2008, 2013) and five times European one by team.
Most of all, he is a four times World medallist and an eight times European one ! World champion runner-up in 2013 (-90 kg) and in 2017 (-100 kg), « Lipo » also won two bronze medals (2014 and 2015). At the European championships, he didn’t miss a podium for eight years in a row ! From 2009 to 2016, the Georgian conquered three Gold (2012, 2014, 2016), four silver and one bronze. Besides, he went on the rampage in the IJF World Tour. He won three Grand Slam (Paris 2013 and 2015, Rio 2012) and five Grand-Prix, adding 19 podiums on the whole.
In 2016, at the Rio Olympic Games, Varlam Liparteliani got through once more to the final. But he lost against Japanese Baker (Yuko). The Olympic silver medallist, at 27 years old (he is born on 1989, February 27th), finds a new purpose.
He is going to fight in the -100 kg division, as his idol Kosei Inoue did in his time. As soon as February 2017, he starts to strike and ranks 3rd in Paris. In August, the fresh Adidas Team member event got through once more to a World final. In Budapest, he first beat Azerbaijani Mammadov and Russian Denisov before the Japanese Wolf stood in his way to the title. But, definitely, we rain check for « Lipo ». At the Worlds and/or in Tokyo ? We take that bet.
