European champion in 2011 (-75 kg), silver medallist in 2012 and 2013, Rene Smaal is the brilliant heir of the dread Dutch school. Born on July 25th 1987 in Apeldoorn, he wins his 1st continental medal by getting the 3rd place in the 2004 European Cadet championships, performance that he does again in Junior in 2007 and, then, in Senior in 2010.
Opposed to 2 aliens, Rafael Aghayev and Luigi Busa in the strongest category in the world Karate, he is one of the few who succeed in teasing them regularly. In 2011, he gets his only gold in an international championship when he beats Busa in Euro final. The two following years, he is again in the final but he successively loses against… Busa (2012) and… Aghayev (2013).
Rene Smaal also won 4 bronze medals in team competitions (Junior in 2007, Senior in 2006, 2014 and 2015), as well as he won fame in many international Opens and won several Karate 1. But, he has never succeeded in getting a world podium. At 29 years old, he wants to erase this mistake in Linz (Austria) for the 23rd world championship (October 26th-30th).
