Or Sasson, it’s heavy !
August 12th, 2016, ½ final of the Rio Olympic Games, heavyweight version. A few seconds are remaining. Or Sasson is on his way to achieve the unthinkable, the unbelievable, the impossible : thanks to a penalty, he is leading and he is going to win against Mister Teddy Riner, unbeaten since 2010 ! But the French scores at the very last second and Or Sasson will not offer to the Israeli Judo its 2nd Olympic final (after Arad in 1992). Nevertheless, by dominating in the bronze contest Garcia Mendoza from Cuba, he will give it its 5th Olympic medal.
Or Sasson (6 ft 4 in, 265 lb) has then gone down his country’s history. Born on August 18th 1990 in Jerusalem, he starts Judo when he is 8, in the wake of his elder, Alon. A decade later, both brothers are teammates in the National team. From the two, Or is the one that is going to shine worldwide. 7 times israeli champion since 2007 (U100 kg and O100 kg), the Israeli has been adding podiums in the international tournaments (17 since 2011, including 5 victories).
After ranking 5th in the 2013 European championships in the U100 kg division, he therefore decides to fight in the heavyweight one. Clever idea ! In 2015, Or Sasson reaches the European Games final, which are considered as the continental championships.
In 2016, he is finalist at the Paris Grand Slam and the Guadalajara Masters and, above all, he wins his 1st Grand-Prix in Tbilissi and gets a new silver European medal (he losses against Riner in the final). His most beautiful one, the 2 times European runner-up is going to win it in Rio. Since, the Olympic bronze medallist has an one-track mind : to become the 2nd Israeli to win 2 medals at the Games. The adidas Team member is already on his way to Tokyo.
