World Champion at 20 years old ! The story is beautiful for David Benavidez, son of Jose Benavidez Sr, his mentor and trainer, brother of Jose Benavidez Jr., the WBA Super Lightweight World champion. By beating in Las Vegas Ronald Gavril on September 8, 2017, the babe of the family (he was born on December 17, 1996 in Phoenix, Arizona) became the youngest winner in history of the world Super Middleweight belt (at 20 years and 234 days).
« It feels amazing to win this title. It’s everything I have dreamt about since I was a little kid. It’s everything I have dedicated myself to and I have worked hard for. It finally paid off », he said in the wake of his victory.
Winner by split decision, David Benavidez quickly agreed for a rematch, so there would be no discussion about the merits of his superiority. On February 17, 2018, he fights Gavril again. Winner of all rounds, he gives a boxing lesson that day which earned him an unanimous decision win, the 20th of his young career started at 17 years old, punctuated by 17 KOs (he won his first 7 professional fights before the end).
On 8 September, the undefeated David Benavidez will again defend his title against his fellow countryman Anthony Dirrell (32-1-1, 24 KOs), holder of the belt in 2014-2015.
