But he has not changed his habits and leaves the Tel Aviv European Championships with a new medal around his neck, his seventh in all, his first in +100 kg. Dutchman Henk Grol, a two-time Olympic medalist in -100 kg (2008, 2012), is starting a new heavyweight career at 33 years old.

Brilliant bronze medalist at the European Championships -the fourth Israeli medal-, Peter Paltchik (-100 kg) was thrilled last Saturday. Winner of Azerbaijan’s Kotsoiev in the ¼ finals (Waza), he lost to France’s Cyrille Maret in the semi-finals (Ippon). But he beautifully resumed against Russia’s Bilalov whom he defeated by Ippon for the Bronze.

U23 European Champion in 2017, three-times U18 European Champion, U18 World Champion, U21 World silver medalist in 2014, Mikhail Igolnikov (-90 kg) seemed to b in demonstration at the Tel Aviv European Championships (April 26th-28th). At 21 years old, he quite easily won his first Senior title. In the final, the Russian born Judoka, undefeated for 13 months, beat the reigning World champion, Serbia’s Majdov.

Finally 5th, Dutchman Noel Van T End (-90 kg) showed a lot of good things on Saturday at the Tel Aviv European Championships (April 26th-28th). Defeated by Spain’s Sherazadishvili in the quarter-finals (Waza), he then beat Georgia’s Gviniashvili by Ippon before losing to Greece's Tselidis for bronze.

She was a bit stunned to lose the final like this. Three penalties that fall quickly, Hansokumake ! Audrey Tcheumeo, the two-time defending champion (-78 kg), saw her compatriot Madeleine Malonga be declared winner of the final of the European Championships last Saturday in Tel Aviv. Yet, it had been a long time since we had not seen her in such a great shape. After four continental titles, she has to be happy with silver. To better strike in the Worlds next September ?

Emotion overwhelmed him. He cried on the podium for the first big title of his career. At 25 years old, Toma Nikiforov became European champion (-100 kg) last Saturday in Tel Aviv, beating Frenchman Cyrille Maret in the final on a chokehold that had earned him losing the gold medal in Abu Dhabi.

Huge disappointment for the two-times European runner-up (2015 and 2016) and bronze medalist at the Rio Olympics. Israel’s Or Sasson (+100 kg) was eliminated in the first round by the young Russian Tamerlan Bashaev, the U23 European champion, in the Golden Score.

Israel has a new hero ! His name ? Sagi Muki. Already crowned European champion in 2015 (-73 kg), the native of Netanya seized the -81 kg title supported by a formidable public taken for granted fo him. Winner of Frenchman Allardon (Ippon), Belgium’s Casse, Hungaria’s Csoknyai, 5th of the 2017 Worlds (Ippon), he then beat Russia’s Lappinagov, finalist of the St-Petersburg Masters, in the semi final (by disqualification). In the final against Belgium’s Chouchi, Sagi Muki had to wait the Golden Score to beat him. But, with the support of this public, nothing could happen to him, besides winning. Congratulations !

She is only 18 years old but the crowd was not mistaken and strongly encouraged her. Unfortunately, that was not enough. After beating her first two opponents by Ippon, Gili Sharir (-63kg) was surprised by Great Britain’s Schlesinger in the quarter-finals (Ippon too) and, then, Russia’s Valkova in repechage by... Ippon. But it could be a rain check for the U23 World Championships bronze medalist and the U21 European Championships runner-up in 2017

4 fights, 4 Ippons and 4 European titles for Kim Polling (-70 kg). Absent last year due to injuries, the Dutch champion hit again after 2013, 2014 and 2015. Her victims ? Montenegro’s Pekovic, her compatriot Van Dijke - both beaten in less than a minute - and Britain’s Howell and Conway to complete her work.
