JUDO - Hidayet Heydarov : « It’s great to have bronze but I wanted to be first »

Of course, he dreamt of another metal in front of his public, who loudly supported him. Still, at only 21 years old, Azerbaijan’s Hidayet Heydarov is already a bronze medalist at a World championship (-73kg), having won the European title in 2017 and an European silver medal in 2018.

Defeated in the semifinals in the Golden score by the defending champion, Japan’s Soichi Hashimoto, he re-motivated himself to win the medal against Mongolia’s Tsend-Ochir. Congratulations to the 2017 Junior World Champion.

What taste does have this medal ? What is your feeling ?

It’s great to have the bronze medal but I wanted to be first. But, this time, there was nothing to do. But it’s still great. It’s much better to win a medal while wearing adidas gi (he laughs).

How difficult did you find it going back from your defeat in the ½ final to focus to the bronze medal match ?

First, I didn’t want to come back as last year but I changed my mind and I thought I must do it. And I won this bronze medal.

How was his preparation ? Was it different from before ?

Right, it was not the same. I was very strong today and I felt a lot more confident.

We will see you next week at the team event ?

Yes, I will participate. It will be hard to win because the Japanese team is in the same draw than us but we (Azerbaijan) want a medal. But I don’t know which one.
