Gevrise Emane is a very busy woman. Her schedule is full, full, full. Between two Judo trainings to shine in Rio’s Games, she gets busy with many activities. Our champion is much involved in associations.
« This is something that means a lot for me”, states the 3 times world champion and 5 times European one. “Our parents always raised us, myself and my 6 brothers and sisters, in the idea of helping others. It’s just my DNA”, she says while burst out laughing, as she often does.
In France, she is very involved in the association named « les Enfants du Jardin » (the Children of the Garden), which supports ill people affected by these rare illness called metabolic.
« Nobody goes there. Or so… »
In Brazil, among other French athletes, Gevrise Emane is the godmother of a project aiming at « arouse will and desire », at giving an idea for life to children of the « Morro do Fuba » favela, located in « la Zona Norte » of Rio de Janeiro, the one where nobody goes. Or so…
Gevrise Emane went already in September 2015 (see : http://solidario.fr/2015/09/29/initiation-au-judo-dans-la-favela/) in this favela where militia pushed back gangs but, still, drug traffics give the daily rhythm . Poverty is really high. The illiteracy rate exceeds 20% of the population (4,5% elsewhere in Rio). Located opposite to the touristic epicenter of the South Zone, and its beaches (Copacabana, Ipanema…), « Morro do Fuba » isn’t really « in ». Associations rather invest in some other Rio neighbourhoods.
The « game of their life » against her
« The « Solida’Rio » project is carried out in partnership with « Unis vers le sport » (United to sport) and the NGO “Terr’Ativa”, explains Gevrise Emane. « Concretely speaking, we are talking about a sports warehouse built in a school, right in the middle of the favela. The goal is to build a multisports ground where some 500 children will be able to practice many different sports : soccer, handball, Taekwondo, Capoeira, Judo, fencing…. At the same time, some specific programs towards some of the children are also initiated”.
Last September, in a small courtyard, on bare concrete, with just a skated carpet, she introduced to Judo dozens of children who played the « game of their life » against her. Next August, she may match them on real tatamis.
Whatever happens in the Olympic Games, Gevrise Emane has already won a gold medal, the fraternity one !
