“I am not 100% happy”

After his victory over Croatian Mladen Brestovac for his 6th defense of the heavy weight world champion title at Glory 28 held in Paris on March 12th, the Dutch star gave us an exclusive interview.

By Ludovic Mauchien

In the 2 first rounds, you stayed on the reserve. Did something go wrong or was it your strategy ?

We have to adapt it a little bit. Brestovac is a southpaw. I haven’t fought too many ones. It’s different. That makes it a lot more difficult. You know, we have to adapt and I was a little bit thinking too much. It got me out of my own game. It gave me a hard time. I wanted to make pressure on him but he moved quite well. If I tried to put too much pressure on him, I expose myself to his high-kicks. That was a danger.

But still, I won every round. And… yeah… It was what it was. I think it was good for me to fight and move around for 5 rounds. For my body and my mental strength, it is really important.

Are you happy with your performance ?

Well, let’s say, it’s ok. I am not 100% happy. I like to show my arsenal. And I was thinking a lot. Sometimes, it’s good, sometimes, it’s bad. In Amsterdam (Glory 26, December 4th 2015, win over Adegbuyi), I was happy. I was perfect. Tonight (read on March 12th), it was not perfect. If I have to do this fight again, one or two key points would be different. I am always critical on myself. We need to develop, to get better everytime. You always make mistakes and you need to get to the next level.

Right after your victory on the ring, you declared that you were sick, at least not at 100%. What is the reason ?

I wasn’t really sick. But I have some small injuries on my foot, while training different stuffs. Both of my feet hurt but, you know, you have to perform even though you have pain or whatever. I did that. Like I said, I dominated every round. I played with him. I wasn’t really in danger in any moment in the fight. So, it was good.

What’s next ?

I am not sure. Just now, I am just going to relax. I think I will have some time off for a few months, enjoying myself, spending time with my family. I planned to do this 2 months ago, that’s true. But I did take some time off even if I am always training. But, still, I tried to relax. But when it comes to the fight, I jump into it because I enjoy this game too much.
